Last weekend saw the season kick off for Reserve Grade and 3rd Grade with matches against the Beenleigh Bears and Medicals respectively 3rd Grade v Medicals - Friday 27th Friday night saw the kick off to the 3rd grades opening session match in the Wyatt cup Friday night rugby, at University of Queensland, St Lucia against the Medical students XV. It was a slow start for the green machine but by the first 5 minutes of the game showed the Students pack was well drilled and their scrum half had both hands on the steering wheel ,but this didn't last long for the young guns. As our Master and Commander, Skipper fly half John Guise led by example, and the over flow of that filtered throughout the team, which boosted our forwards confidence in defence, and the work rate at the break downs. John Guise boot was in tune and kicked two conversion plus converting his own try. Other memorable moments were seeing Andy Marsland running in a try off a switch pass, to run around to score under the posts, Richard Ottie in the loose forwards, was everywhere the ball was the whole game and was very unlucky not to score a try in the dying minutes of the game. Final score Medical XV 17 - Brisbane Irish 3rd XV 14 For a team that is less than two weeks old in realistic terms we have played beyond my expectations, we have a confidence growing in the team that we can be competitive and we can build on that. I'd like to thank the 2nds who sat on the bench , Stuart Burley who took control of the water boy roll and other management duties while I was on the paddock. The 3 , 2 , 1 our man of the match points for the game selected by the referee. Our man of the match on 3 points John Guise , 2 points Andy Marsland , 1 point Richard Ottie, Well done Green Machine.
