Irish 2nd XV win the Scotney Cup

Irish 2nd XV win the Scotney Cup

Sunday, 31 August 2008

The Brisbane Irish have won their FIRST Grand Final in the 2nd grade in the Club's history.

The 2nd XV made the Grand Final for only the third time in the club's history and after a spirited display, defeated the Pine Rivers Boars at Ballymore on Saturday. With the lead changing several times during the game, the Irish went into the half time break down by two points.

Playing the Irish expansive style of rugby has served us well in the latter part of the season. Playing the Boars, a very forwards oriented team, meant that defence in our own quarter was the key. The Boars got into our territory on several occasions and pushed our defence to the limit, scoring typical forwars tries from the pick and drive. The 2nds did not give up eventhough they were down by four points with only ninety seconds to go in the game. In typical Irish fashion, they played the full seventy minutes scoring a try through the backs with only thirty seconds to play. Irish 21 - Boars 20.

There were scenes of excitement and relief as team members and supporters streamed onto the Ballymore Field to share the moment with the players. It was delightful to see Joe Dimes the 2nd XV Captain hold high the Scotney Cup.
